Makeup Advice for Contact Wearers from your Canton, OH Optometrist

If you wear contact lenses there are a few precautions that should be taken in regard to the use of makeup. Here are some professional tips on ways to ensure your eyes remain lovely and healthy.

Which Cosmetics Are the Safest for your Eyes?

First of all, we recommend that you buy only brands that are oil free and fragrance free. In addition, to prevent peeling and smearing, which could end up bothering your contacts, purchase water-resistant mascara and eyeliner. Finally it's important to replace eye makeup frequently – it is preferable to replace mascara once a month, eyeliner every three months and eye shadows after half a year.

Tips on The Safe Application of Makeup

Always be careful to rinse your hands thoroughly before applying your contacts. Put on all eye makeup carefully so you don't jostle your contacts. Make sure you don't apply mascara or eye liner to the inside eye lid and start mascara at the midpoint of the eyelashes instead of the bottom near the lid. Don't share makeup with others or apply when the eyes are swollen or irritated.

In addition to cleaning off cosmetics daily try to be proactive and opt for glasses when dying or treating your hair with any sort of chemical.

Taking proper care in using cosmetics during lens use can prevent red, itchy or infected eyes as well as damage to lenses.

If your eyes become red or irritated don't apply makeup. Don't hesitate to contact your eye doctor if you have any redness, discomfort, or irritation. Our Canton, OH optometrist will be glad to assist you with any contact issues that you may be having.
