Dry eye is one of the most common conditions we see in our office, and it often causes discomfort, blurred vision, and a constant need for relief. One of the first treatment options many people try is over-the-counter artificial tears. These drops come in different consistencies, or viscosities, which can make a big difference in how they feel and how well they work.
Low viscosity eye drops are thinner and feel more like natural tears. They spread quickly across the surface of the eye and provide fast relief. Because they are so lightweight, they don’t usually blur vision and are comfortable to use during the day. The downside is that their effect doesn’t last as long, so they may need to be applied more frequently.
High viscosity eye drops are thicker and stay on the eye longer. This makes them a good choice for people with moderate to severe dry eye symptoms, or for nighttime use when extended moisture is helpful. However, because of their thickness, they can cause temporary blurriness, which is why many patients reserve them for bedtime.
While both low and high viscosity eye drops can help relieve symptoms, they only address dryness on the surface. If your dry eye is caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), which is a condition where the oil glands in your eyelids become blocked, eye drops alone will not be enough. MGD requires targeted treatment to restore proper gland function and tear stability.
At Dr. Richard E. Hults & Associates, we take a personalized approach to dry eye care. Our process includes:
• Comprehensive Diagnosis: Identifying the underlying cause of your dry eye, whether it’s evaporative (MGD-related) or aqueous deficient.
• Personalized Treatment Plans: Tailored solutions based on your specific needs.
• Prescription Eye Drops: Advanced formulas that address inflammation and improve tear quality.
• Punctal Plugs: Tiny devices that help your eyes retain natural tears longer.
• In-Office Therapies: Specialized treatments to improve gland function and provide longer-lasting relief.
Choosing the right type of dry eye drop depends on your symptoms, lifestyle, and the cause of your dryness. While artificial tears can provide temporary comfort, they aren’t always enough - especially in cases of MGD. That’s where expert diagnosis and personalized treatment make all the difference.
